I’m having trouble acquiring a GPS signal.
There are three likely causes of this:
- The GPS receiver has not got a good view of the sky. In order to work, the GPS needs to have a line-of-sight view of a good proportion of the sky. If you are unable to put the receiver somewhere where it can do this, then, for most of our GPS units you can buy an external antenna
- The GPS is positioned behind either double-glazing or an internally heated windscreen; both of these will block GPS signal
- You have not given the unit long enough to acquire a fix or you were moving at speed when you tried to acquire the first fix. To acquire the first fix of a day can take some time, this is because the unit needs not only to find the satellites but then receive data from them regarding their orbits. This takes a minimum of forty-five seconds from when the receiver has found the satellite
My GPS fix drops out periodically, particularly when I am orbiting or changing direction in the aircraft.
If the receiver is positioned so that it has only got a good view of the sky in one direction, then when you make a turn it will no longer be able to receive the satellites it was using for positional information. You can solve this problem by repositioning the unit.
My Aware won’t switch on
If your Aware won’t switch on, you probably need to do a soft-reset. The procedure is as follows:
Remove the stylus from the back of the unit (the stylus is located on the right hand side of the top surface of the unit)
Press and hold the power button
Poke the stylus into the reset hole, which is located next to the memory card (you should feel a slight ‘click’)
Release the power button
Release the stylus. Unit should switch on
How can I power my Aware for longer?
The Aware’s internal battery should give on average 1.5 hours of runtime and the Aware 5 up to 3 hours run time. For many this is insufficient so we would advise using an external power supply such as an aircraft 12/24v power source or via an additional battery such as the PowerMonkey, available via the webshop, which will add an extra 3.5 hours run time to your device.
I can’t use a suction mount for my Aware
The Aware webshop stocks a number of additional mounting options for the Aware ranging from kneeboard mounts to yoke mounts. Please feel free to contact us with any queries regarding mounting options as we will always be extremely happy to assist.
How can I update my Aware?
